At the Elevator Brewing Company, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. But our beer, that’s a different story. It’s been that way for the past 15 years, ever since we started brewing in an old grain elevator in Marysville, Ohio.
In March of 2000, we opened the Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus as a place to showcase our beers. Located in the iconic Bott Brothers Building in downtown Columbus, our restaurant has become one of the city’s mainstays for fine cuisine and great brews. During the first year of brewing, it was the only place you could find Elevator beer, but word would spread fast, and by March of 2000, we began to self-distribute throughout Columbus, Marysville, and the surrounding areas.
In early 2003, Vic Schiltz, former Elevator Brewmaster, came on board. In the same year, a second brewer joined our team, and in the five years that followed, the Elevator steadily increased production and distribution while refining our recipes and honing our craft. In June 2017, we welcomed new Brewmaster Doug Beedy. In his new role, with over 20 years of experience, Doug oversees brewery operations, production and creative control. Change is in the air at the Elevator Brewery and it smells like delicious craft beer. Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Doug is an Army veteran and a graduate of Michigan State University (Don’t worry, he’s a Buckeye’s Fan. O-H). He received his brewer’s training at the Siebel Institute of Technology and started his professional brewing career at Boyne River Brewing Co. in 1996. Since then he’s worked at various breweries in both Ohio in Michigan as head brewer and consultant. He is also a member of the Brewer’s Association and a Certified BJCP Beer Judge. His favorite styles to drink and produce are Belgians and Farmhouse styles, as well as gluten-free and cask-conditioned beers.
In 2007, our Dark Horse Lager (now renamed Dark Force Lager) took home a Bronze Medal at the Great American Beer Festival, marking the beginning of a series of beer festival awards and honors, and spurring the company forward into a new phase of growth. This culminated with a move out of the original brewery to our current production facility located in the heart of downtown Columbus in 2009. Less than one year after beginning to hand-bottle at the new facility, we implemented our first bottling line and expanded production with the purchase of a larger brew house and a number of 60-barrel fermentors. The rest, as they say, is history.
From this point forward, the Elevator Brewing Company began selling a number of its most popular beers into leading retailers, as well as restaurants and bars, throughout the city. A series of regional distribution partnerships would follow between 2012 and 2014, leading to placement throughout the state, from Cincinnati, Toledo, and Dayton, to Cleveland, Youngstown, and Akron. 2012 and 2013 also saw a series of blind tasting award wins at the Beverage Tasting Institute. In 2014, the Elevator signed on for distribution within its hometown by Columbus Distributing Company, a move that will make our award-winning brews available at even more of your favorite groceries, carryout’s, restaurants, and bars. In 2015, our hoppy wheat ale, Mogabi, won a Bronze Medal at GABF.
The Elevator Brewing Company was founded in 1999 by a Father/Son drinking team committed to delivering quality craft beer to authentic people just like you. Now in our second century of brewing, our aim remains the same. Our commitment to excellence is evident in each sip of our award-winning beers.
